Ecology and environment

Discover a non-exhaustive list of the different possible professions in the Life, Earth and Environmental Sciences.

Researcher (M/F) in physical geography

In the Anthropocene Epoch, physical geography looks to provide keys to understanding and managing contemporary environmental issues (climate change, sea level rise, natural hazards, etc.). The approaches focus on the analysis of biophysical processes, while taking into account the complex interactions with societies on different spatial (local to global) and temporal scales (short or instantaneous time to geological time).

Researcher (M/F) in functional ecology

The research focuses on how terrestrial, aquatic, and marine ecosystems function. The aim of this post is to understand and quantify the interactions between the different organisms living in these ecosystems as well as with their physical and chemical environments. This research combines field observations, in situ experiments and experiments on simplified ecosystems (ecotrons), as well as statistical and mechanistic modeling. This research allows us to answer questions such as the role of biodiversity in how ecosystems function and their resilience and resistance in the context of global changes (climatic and anthropogenic), the evolutionary trajectories of these ecosystems under climate change, and the importance of ecosystem functions (e.g., oxygen production, carbon dioxide storage, protection of water quality, maintenance of biodiversity, regulation of outbreaks, etc.) so we can maintain a livable planet.

Researcher (M/F) in marine megafauna conservation

The aim of this post is to describe, understand, and predict the effects of environmental changes on marine mammals and birds, most of which are heritage species and environmental sentinels. The studies support fundamental research but also respond to societal demands concerning the preservation of marine biodiversity in response to anthropogenic pressures. They also support public conservation policies, in particular by providing expert feedback and suggestions to the Ministry of Ecology.

Researcher (M/F) in socio-ecosystem functioning

Whether it is the loss of biodiversity threatening the functioning of ecosystems or issues concerning risk for businesses, the environmental crisis requires a joint, systemic, and territorial approach. Firmly oriented towards research-action in relation to societal issues, this scientific field is dedicated to an inter- and transdisciplinary approach working with the various stakeholders in society to formalize and theorize the functioning of socio-ecosystems and help with their management, governance, and sustainability.

Researcher (M/F) in ecology and theoretical evolution

The aim of this post is to formalize the ecological processes and the major mechanisms of evolution, i.e., to describe them in the form of a simple theoretical model that allows the observed or expected changes in populations and communities to be scripted and predicted. These models are based on various laws and theories and are also supported by data from observations and experiments that must be verified, synthesized and homogenized. These data are used either to make the parameters used in the models more biologically plausible or to test the robustness of the models and their underlying assumptions.
