Remuneration of civil servants

Salary or wages? Allowance or bonus? Index point, grades, steps...: the remuneration of civil servants in the public service uses a specific vocabulary that can be confusing. Let's put things straight and simplify!

How does compensation work?

Your remuneration consists mainly of your indexed salary. More specifically, the amount of this is obtained (gross monthly salary) by multiplying the monthly value of the index point (4.92 euros on July1, 2023) by the increased index attached to the step in which you are classified (which ranges from 340 to 1329).

To this basic salary may be added monthly:

  • The allowance for functions, hardship and expertise (IFSE), linked to the grade and the function performed for engineers and technicians (M/F);
  • An allowance linked to grade and an allowance linked to the exercise of certain specific duties or responsibilities for researchers (M/F);
  • Residence allowance fixed as a percentage of the basic salary (3%, 1% or 0%) depending on the administrative residence (city of assignment);
  • The family salary supplement (amount depending on the number of dependent children) ;
  • Partial reimbursement of commuting expenses;
  • Specific bonuses or allowances linked to the performance of certain functions.
